Interest rate rises and increasing house prices are putting added pressures on first time buyers and anyone moving or investing in a home.

But as Peter Hobday explains, the number of first time buyers entering the housing market has actually risen despite the added costs.

The complex and developing housing market is not as simple as one might hope. New schemes such as shared equity and continued buy-to-let investment are adding to demand and not giving the market any room to deflate.

And while homes in some northern areas sit empty, building projects in the south-east have not kept up with demand.
