Revitalising Communities
Though the reasons why many communities are disintegrating are numerous. It is clear that something needs to be done to bring back safe streets, community spirit and environmental regeneration. The Communities and Local Government initiative was created in 2006, and is at the heart of the Government's commitment to social justice, social mobility and economic inclusion.
Another way in which communities can be revitalised is through Public Private Partnership and the Private Finance Initiative. The Private Finance Initiative (PFI) began in 1992 to open up opportunities for more private sector involvement in the provision of public services. This allows for new hospitals, schools and prisons without raising taxes.
A particularly contentious issue that needs to be addressed is the availability of affordable housing. A Government scheme enabling first time buyers to get a foot onto the property ladder by paying 50 per cent of the price of a new home is now in place.
